Finnish as a second language (S2) studies are intended for students whose native language is not Finnish. Your vocational upper secondary qualification includes mandatory and optional Finnish language studies.
You can complete the mandatory course Viestintä ja vuorovaikutus, suomi toisena kielenä, 4 cps in contact teaching or online (eRiveria). Completing the course in eRiveria requires a language skill level of B1.1 or higher.
If you have not previously studied Swedish, you can take the Suomen kielen viestintätilanteita course instead. The course is worth 1 cp. The course is studied independently in the OPI environment.
You can include 1–9 cps worth of optional Finnish courses in your studies. The course Viestintä ja vuorovaikutus, suomi toisena kielenä, optional, 3 cps, can be completed in contact teaching at Riveria. In addition, you can study various online courses at Karelia UAS.

Karelia UAS also offers Finnish as a second language studies. Preparatory pathway studies are intended for students who wish to continue their studies at a higher education institution after Riveria. The pathway studies for immigrants are intended for strengthening the student’s Finnish and English language skills and mathematical skills. The studies allow the student to familiarise themselves with the field in practice. If you have studied Finnish at a university (as a major or minor) or university of applied sciences, or in vocational education and training in Finland, you do not need to complete S2 studies, as they can be recognised.
Discuss with your guidance counsellor how you are planning to complete your S2 studies.
